News Casting

In this twist on traditional newscasting events, participants should invent a believable news item and report on it.  Groups can consist of 2 or 3 people. Each group is required to present between 5 and 7 minutes in length. The newscasting should consist of:

Participant A:  News anchor who introduces the background to the story

Participant B:  Reporter who gives the details of the story who is live at the scene.

The news anchor will ask a variety of questions to the reporter.

OR

Participant A:  News anchor who introduces the background to the story

Participant B:  Reporter who gives the details of the story who is live at the scene.

Participant C:  Person interviewed by the reporter who is also live at the scene

The news anchor will ask a variety of questions to the reporter. The reporter will ask a variety of questions to the interviewee.

 

Possible topics (but not limited to) include:

1. Trump resigns as US President

2. China abandons Panda conservation efforts

3. Indonesian Health Minister calls for ban on sale and production of instant noodles

4. Indonesia to slash military budget to focus on health and education

5. Man marries tree in California

6. France pushes for eugenics to be taught at universities

 

Schedule:

Preliminary

Day, date: Friday, 1st of November 2019

Time: 08.00-18.00

Final round

Day, Date           : Saturday, 2nd of November 2019

Time                    : 10.00-12.00

Groups will have 6-7 minutes to present their news item. Participants will be penalised 10 points for every 30 seconds under or over the time limit.

For example:

A red sign will be shown on the judges’ table to indicate that a penalty will be given if the news ends. A green sign will be shown on the judges’ table to indicate that no penalty will be given if the news ends. A yellow sign will be shown for 30 seconds as a warning before a penalty will be given. 

Points will be awarded based on the following criteria:

Content (50 points)

  • Complete – (who, what, when, where, how etc.)
  • Concise – (get to the point, don’t add unnecessary information)
  • Coherent – (clear, logical, cohesive)

Delivery (30 points)

  • Physical – (appearance, body language, speaking area)
  • Voice – (flexibility, volume, intonation)
  • Manner – (directness, assurance, enthusiasm)

Use of language (20 points)

  • Appropriateness – (to conversationstyle e.g. formal or informal?)
  • Correctness – (Grammar, pronunciation, word selection)
